The Carson City School District was pleased to host Nevada State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jhone Ebert last week in a listening and outreach tour of some schools and programs in Carson City. Ebert was accompanied by Nevada Department of Education’s Deputy Superintendent Ann Marie Dickson and Deputy Superintendent Christy McGill.
The tour initiative aimed to foster a direct line of communication between state education leaders and local educators, focusing on understanding the unique challenges and innovative programs being implemented within schools.
State education leaders were able to engage with teachers, administrators and students while highlighting the states commitment to support educational excellence and addressing the diverse needs of students and teachers.
“NDE leadership and I loved seeing firsthand the dedication and innovation occurring within the walls of our Carson City schools during my listening tour,” said Jhone Ebert, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Engaging in meaningful conversations, we gathered valuable insights from school board members, district leaders, teachers, and students while showcasing their hard work and commitment to excellence.”
The tour began at the Carson City School District office where Ebert, Dickson and McGill were introduced to nearly two dozen leaders including administrators, principals, directors, teachers and trustees. Highlights and challenges were the primary topics of discussion.
Then a quick visit was made to Eagle Valley Middle School to visit a computer science class and explore the newly added classrooms and STEM lab. The group was also welcomed by Nevada’s FIRST LEGO League Championship robotics team.
State education leaders and group were then introduced to a pilot behavior program at Mark Twain Elementary School called BLASST (Behavioral Learning and Social Skills Training). The program works in partnership with Advanced Child Behavior Solutions and provides services for students and teachers to learn mitigation techniques and behavior alternatives.
The tour concluded at Carson High School where student leadership discussed aspirations and benefits of their high school careers as well as potential ways to improve education in today’s environment. The group also toured the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) building and were introduced to cadet leadership and Lieutenant Commander Dan Meyer, finalist for Nevada Educator of the Year.
