Carson High School (CHS) is proud to announce six seniors are among 72 thousand students nationwide to earn academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. The recognitions are designed to help underrepresented students celebrate their hard work and create additional pathways to college.
The College Board has four recognition programs that award honors to students who met academic criteria and belonged to an underrepresented student group in the 2022-23 school year. The program celebrates the strong academic performance of rural area, Black, Indigenous and Latino students.
Students must have met the following criteria to qualify:
- Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Earn PSAT/NMSQT® or PSAT™ 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of test takers in each state for each award program or earn a score of 3 or higher on 2 or more Advance Placement (AP) Exams.
- Attend school in a rural area or small town or identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino or Indigenous or Native.
All of Carson High School's recipients have participated in highly rigorous AP or JumpStart pathways. These pathways, along with Career and Technical Education, support students in their goal of attending college, and they are competitive nationwide.
The following students, alphabetically by last name, have been awarded recognition:
- Maritza Alvarez, National Hispanic Recognition Award
- Zachary Guiza, National Indigenous Award
- Jora Kurland, National Hispanic Recognition Award
- Izabella McNeely, National Rural and Small Town Award
- Alesan Ponce, National Hispanic Recognition Award
- Ziah Rizo, National Hispanic Recognition Award
In addition to recognizing the students’ accomplishments, the honors may be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully stand out during the admissions process.
Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year. Students receive their awards in time to include them on their college and scholarship applications.
